Garcia Good; Most Else Bad in Bucs 31-19 Loss to Jags

GarciaWhile QB Jeff Garcia looked like he was in form on Saturday night, the rest of the Buccaneers looked a bit lost as Tamp Bay fell to the Jaguars 31-19 in preseason action. The loss drops the Bucs to 1-1, but it was the play of Garcia that gives Tampa Bay some hope for what hopefully will be a much better 2007. The veteran QB went 6-for-6 for 43 yards, and despite getting sacked and fumbling a snap, led the Bucs to a TD drive that ended with a pass to David Boston.

”Things were better,” Garcia said. ”It was nice to get a scoring drive together and put some points on the board.” The Bucs then basically gave the game away, allowing the Jags to put up a whopping 24 points in the second quarter as they blew the game open. It was something that didn’t sit well with Bucs coach Jon Gruden. ”Our second-team defense hasn’t shown up,” the Bucs coach said.

That would be an understatement, as a couple of second quarter three-and-outs by the Bucs were quickly turned the other way for the Jags, as they drove for two TD drives to build the lead. ”Some good things happened, and there are a lot of things we want to do a lot better,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. ”It was good to see a surge there at the end of the half.” One TD was for RB LaBrandon Toefield, who went in from 8 yards out, and another was QB David Garrard running in from three yards out with 4 seconds left in the half. Garrard ended the night 11-for-14 with 129 yards.

The rest of the Bucs offense was Luke McCown, who was the second QB and was 9-of-13 for 66 yards. Bruce Gradkowski played the fourth quarter and found Mark Jones for a 53-yard score, making it 31-13. Chris Simms seems to have played his last game in Tampa Bay, as he didn’t make it off the bench for the second straight game.
