Simms Placed on IR; Team Still Looking at Backs

As the Bucs look to add a running back either through trade or free agency before SimmsSunday’s upcoming game, the team made a roster move Tuesday to make room for that back. The team placed 4th string QB Chris Simms on the injured reserve list, halting any ideas of a comeback for the 2007 season. It does not come as much of a shock, as the team appears set at the QB spot for now, with steady Jeff Garcia as the starter. Simms is somewhat fortunate he was not released during training camp, as there was much discussion about him being released.

Simms was hurt early in the 2006 season and ended up having to have his spleen removed. It has taken Simms now about a year to get back to being healthy, and GM Bruce Allen stated he still feels Simms is not there yet. “We thought he would have recovered by now, but it’s taking longer than either Chris or we would have hoped for,” Allen said. ‘There’s nothing he hasn’t tried to do to get better. But he’s not at full strength and we don’t anticipate him being at full strength this season. We feel this is the best move for Chris to regain his strength. We’re confident he will recover completely.”

The QB had signed a two-year deal towards the end of last season worth $7 mil with a least $3 mil guaranteed. Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown are the other three QB’s on the roster. It’s this writers opinion that putting Simms on the IR is nothing more than a precursor to releasing him at the end of the season, despite the fact that Allen likes him enough to have kept 4 QB’s on the roster for this long.

On the running back front, the name being talked about the most as being brought in is 34-year-old fullback Zach Crockett. The 13-year vet most recently played with the Oakland Raiders, but was let go on September 2nd. Crockett has worked under Jon Gruden in the past, so getting to know the offense won’t be much of an issue, but one has to wonder at 34 how much gas Crockett has left in the tank.

The team is also talking about bringing back RB Lionel Gates and putting him on the practice squad. A few other backs possibly in the mix at being looked at include former Panthers back Eric Shelton, former 49’ers back Kevan Barlow, and former Gators back Ciatrick Fason.

  1. terry says:

pierre thomas of saints who was a free agent who the team kept over pittman, a draft pick, who is now with the Rams is a possibility with pittman 1 tier down.

both starters on new orleans and rams are down and thomas and pittman are 3rd/4th on depth and may not be traded currently.

    j. cribbs on cleveland is a back to watch

michael robinson on san francisco is a tough rb w/ qb exp. from penn state and the west coast offense in niners offense.

running bks. from willie p. to jones-drew to s. young (Broncos) and pierre thomas (saint) are helping and are depth preservers for others.
