Bucs Looking to Bennett for RB Help

While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been plodding along trying to rush the football since losing Carnell Williams and Micahel Pittman to injuires, the team finally may have a solution.  His name is Michael Bennett.  Sources from Tampa state that as of late Monday the Bucs and KC Chiefs, where Bennett plays now, were talking about a deal to move the back to Tampa Bay.  The deal would have to be done by the trading deadline, which is 4pm today.

Bennett has fallen out of favor in Kansas City, where Larry Johnson is the workhorse back and when Bennett was called upon, he rarely produced much.  He has run the ball this season for just 52 yards on 20 carries.  The Tampa Tribune is reporting that the asking price for Bennett should be nothing more than a second-day draft pick in the 2008 draft.

Tampa Bay has tried to fill the void of Williams and Pittman with veteran Zack Crockett and former Buc Lionel Gates.  Both those backs were available for a reason, as age and lack of production have hindered both in their time in the league.  Earnest Graham is the primary ball carrier right now for Tampa Bay, and he was basically a special teams player before all the injuires took place.  He rushed for just 29 yards in the teams 13-10 win Sunday over Tennessee.

The last two weeks the Bucs have been awful on the ground, putting up just 47 rushing yards total, which is the fewest in the league over that stretch.  Adding Bennett would be an upgrade, as he has had times in his career with the Vikings where he has had to carry the load.  In 2002 he rushed for a career high 1296 yards and five TD’s.  His last season in Minnesota he ran for 473 yards.  The Bucs need a back – bad, and if Bennett is the best they can get, then they should do what they have to do to grab him.
