Olson Hired As Quarterbacks Coach
In what can be condidered a reunion of sorts and also one less coordinator who has been pulled from the unemployment line, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday named former St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Greg Olson as their quarterbacks coach. Olson had spent two years running the Rams’ offense, which ranked 6th overall in 2006; the same offense slipped to 24th, hastening Olson’s departure from St. Louis. Olson was offered a chance to stay on as a position coach, but opted not to. Olson replaces Paul Hackett.
Olson’s hiring by the Bucs reunites him with quarterback Jeff Garcia, who was the San Francisco 49ers’ starting QB when Olson broke into the NFL as a quarterbacks coach with the Niners in 2001. Olson worked with Garcia for a year and has spent 6 as an assistant coach at the NFL level; he has also spent 15 years as a coach at the NCAA level.
