No Truth to a Tuna Sighting in Tampa Coming Soon

One of the theories (it’s more like a crazy-ass hypothesis) making the rounds is that Fins V.P. of football operations will take his cash-and-carry deal in Miami, and head up the road to Tampa.

On the surface, it makes sense. Parcells flirted with the Bucs six years ago, to the point where current Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum spent two days in Tampa interviewing for the job that Rich McKay held at the time.

But the Tuna jilted the Glazers, and really rich people don’t tend to forget the rare occasions when they don’t get what they want.

But the primary impediment to Parcells getting another chance to leave the Glazers at the altar is the fact that Parcells can’t walk away from Miami until Stephen Ross acquires control of the team from Wayne Huizenga.

As we reported on January 7 (and as everyone pretty much ignored), Ross was having trouble lining up the $500 million or so in financing that he’d need to close the deal.

In the nine days since then, there has been no further word regarding the transaction that, prior to January 7, supposedly was imminent.

So unless and until Ross can get the money and close the deal, Parcells cannot leave. So he cannot go to work for the Bucs or anyone else, unless and until his contract expires or Huizenga fires him.
