Breaking Down the Bucs 2009 Salary Cap

ESPN’s Insider section just did a full-scale blowout about the salary cap for each and every team around the league. Here’s what they had to say on the Buccaneers:

2009 Salary Cap: $150,624,193
Player with Highest Cap Number: WR Antonio Bryant ($9,890,760; 6.6 percent of cap)
Highest Cap Number for a Player No Longer with Club: WR Joey Galloway ($1,185,000; 0.8 percent of cap; 29th-highest on club)
Player Who Has to Live Up to Cap Number: Bryant

In 2008, Bryant made his return to the NFL after a year away from the game, signing a one-year contract with Tampa Bay. In his return, Bryant had a career year, catching 83 balls for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns, all career highs. This offseason the Bucs slapped the franchise tag on him. Perhaps before they make a significant multiyear investment in the wide receiver with a checkered past, the Bucs want Bryant to prove that 2008 was not a fluke both on and off the field.
