Leftwich the Front Runner So Far in the QB Derby

Sporting News reports that so far, Byron Leftwich seems to be the front runner for the QB spot for the Bucs:

It’s still too early to predict a winner in the battle for the starting quarterback job, but there’s a sense around camp that Byron Leftwich has pulled ahead of Luke McCown and rookie Josh Freeman who is an afterthought. The team would like to keep Freeman on the bench this year and it will do so if someone can step up and lead the offense which right now looks like Leftwich who has consistently connected on downfield passes that figure to be a regular part of the offense. The team plans to give both McCown and Leftwich a start in the preseason, and that’s where the tale will ultimately be told because if Leftwich can sustain his practice play, he’ll open the season as the starter.
