Cowher Rumors Still Swirling

Via PFT,

Though the first-year (technically, second) coach has been informed by ownership that he’ll be back in 2010, Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports that the Bucs still might be in the mix for Bill Cowher.

Per La Canfora, the Buccaneers were eyeballing an annual compensation package in the range of $5 million to $6 million.  Cowher wants more; we think he’s hoping for $10 million per year.

La Canfora also points out that Cowher has concerns regarding the player payroll, an issue with which he often had to contend in Pittsburgh.

Cowher reportedly was targeting the Bucs, Bears, Panthers, and Texans.  The Bills are still a possibility, if owner Ralph Wilson is willing to break the bank.

Still, Cowher is running low on options, and it’s possible that someone is leaking news of ongoing interest by the Bucs in order to get the Panthers to pull the trigger on John Fox.

As to the Bucs, we doubt that they would have told Morris he’ll be back if they still think they have a shot at Cowher.  Then again, last year’s surprise firing of Jon Gruden should make it clear that, when it comes to the Bucs, nothing ever really is.
