Dominik Says Penn’s Weight an Issue in Giving Him a Deal

Sporting News reports on the Bucs not willing to give Donald Penn a new deal due to his weight problems:

Buccanners GM Mark Dominik says the team has not been willing to give disgruntled LT Donald Penn a long-term contract because he hasn’t shown he can consistently keep his weight under control. Penn, a restricted free agent, has yet to sign his one-year, $3.168 million tender in hopes of getting a long-term deal.

“I’m really disappointed,” Dominik said during a Q&A session with fans at the team’s headquarters. “When you think about a left tackle and how important that position is especially to a young franchise quarterback. And that guy during the season gains 40 pounds and basically turns his back to nutrition and keeping himself in shape. That’s disappointing to me. Rightfully so. I’m just being blatantly honest with you. … When you look at the film, he continued to digress (during the final third of the season).”
