Fantasy Forecast: Buccaneers DST

The Tampa Bay defense scored 98 fantasy points last season, placing them at 21st in ESPN scoring systems. In a ten-team league, with each team taking two defenses, they would not have been drafted. They gave up 386 points but got 28 sacks, 19 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries, 3 defensive TDs, a rare 6 blocked kicks and 2 special teams touchdowns.

A year earlier, they gave up 305 points, had 29 sacks, 22 interceptions, 8 forced fumbles, 5 defensive TDs, 2 blocked kicks and 2 special teams touchdowns.

PROJECTION: 275 points allowed, 37 sacks, 20 interceptions, 9 forced fumbles, 3 defensive TDs, 5 blocked kicks and 1 special teams touchdown. 17-18th round or UDFA in most leagues. The Bucs have some of the most feared offenses on the schedule: the Saints twice, the Ravens, and the Cardinals. They also face divisional foes with decent talent in the Panthers and Falcons. That said, they face mistake-prone quarterbacks, too (Palmer, Cassel, Bradford, Stafford,  and Leftwich or Batch) and this young defense will get more turnovers if the defensive tackle additions can even put up an average run defense. I will be watching them closely in preseason, but I don’t recommend drafting them, unless as a back-up defense if the top 13-14 are off the board.
