Preseason Week 2 Preview: vs. the Chiefs

All eyes will be on Kareem Huggins. The little sparkplug is going to get snaps with the first team and I, for one, would rather see this team go two quarters this week than into the fourth next week. As a young team, they could benefit from the confidence boost they will likely get in the run game and the challenges they will get to their run and pass defenses.

In the second half of last season, no one ran the ball better than the Chiefs, mostly with Jamaal Charles. However, few teams defended the run as badly as them at 4.7 ypc allowed. Buffalo rivaled that and Tampa Bay, at 4.8 was the only team even more bad at defending the run. The Chiefs did do a better job last week, holding Atlanta to just 2.8 ypc.

There are some monsters in the Kansas City receiving corps. Speed maven Dexter McCluster joins physical targets Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers.

Two positives I’ve seen this week were the ratcheting up of the intensity in practice and the placement of Derrick Ward and Michael Clayton on their hot seats. Essentially, this team has very few elite players. Therefore, the best way to get the most out of these players is to push them hard, particularly some of the later round and undrafted rookies. How else will you find the next 7th round wonders? If the non-elite players get injured in the process of practicing hard and playing a lot in the preseason, so be it. Raheem certainly hasn’t backed down from saying his goal is to get this team in the playoffs. Applying some pressure to Derrick Ward and Michael Clayton could expedite some finality, at least in the depth chart for week 1, even if they might strategically delay either’s release or trade. Either they respond well and earn roster spots or not, but it’s time to find out.
