Derrick Ward, Petty Thief

Derrick Ward, who was rumored to be released for financial reasons, claims the Bucs aren’t trying to win.

This is very dangerous ground upon which to tread. Just because saving money was the operative goal in releasing Ward, doesn’t mean that Mark Domenik and Raheem Morris don’t think they can win with his replacements.

Trying to win is something that could easily be questioned of some owners in baseball. Zach Grienke of the Royals has wondered when his team will become formidable. Mike Sweeney has described his experience there as being accompanied by an empty feeling. In MLB, you have teams that go more than a decade without a winning season. There have been teams notoriously tanking it in basketball in efforts to stuff the lottery, a device instituted with the purpose of trying to keep teams from tanking it.

In football, however, you sacrifice your body on a daily basis. There is no room for quitting. The teams that don’t “try to win” are shamed publicly. The parity in this league proves owners are not being complacent.

Many have questioned Derrick Ward’s effort while he was here and I tried to stay away from that. He may think he’s getting revenge on his critics, but anyone who’s watched this team this year knows they are trying to win. Derrick should have just taken his money and shut up.
