Bucs Get Visits From 2 More Linebackers

The Bucs have hosted two more linebackers over the last few days: Georgia ILB Akeem Dent (6’1″, 241 lbs.) and North Carolina OLB Quan Sturdivant (6’1″, 242 lbs.).

They are both undersized. Both are solid, not elite athletes. Sturdivant is probably a case of respect: they’d like to check him out because he’s a guy who could be best player available where they are picking in the third round.

Dent is more renown for his leadership qualities. This could be an example of trying to infuse the locker room with players who may be a little more mature than some of the others they’ve drafted. Dent also visited Atlanta, so there could be a chance to snag a guy they want, too.

On the topic of steals, injury and/or character concerns – and sometimes 40 times -, caused Adrian Peterson, Beanie Wells,  Joe Haden and Mike Williams to fall on draft day. The players who are missing or demoted on some draft boards for this very important, free agentless draft include: Clemson DE De’Quan Bowers (work ethic, injuries), Colorado CB Jimmy Smith (character) and QB Ryan Mallett (character). Of those three, I think Mallett makes the most sense (as long as Bowers doesn’t fall to pick 8 of the second; in which case, you try to move up), especially if Johnson is destined to be traded. If Mallett falls to the third – which would be a stretch given his size and arm strength, you could draft him, give him a 5-year contract and be set at the position for awhile. They want to have a guy who can step in and be as close to as good as Josh Freeman, and I don’t know if Josh Johnson has that ability.
