2009 Draft Re-Dux: Stafford, Sanchez or Freeman?

A lot of people have been debating which QB from the 2009 1st round is going to have the finest career.

ESPN did a poll and – after 43,720 votes tabulated – Josh Freeman earned 43% of the vote, Matt Stafford 37%, Mark Sanchez just 20%.

First, I would like to dissect Mark Sanchez’s game. Sanchez has to be the streakiest of the three. I think he deserves to come in third, but he is mentally tough, a great leader, a hard worker and is comfortable outside the pocket. People forget that he only started one season at college and has already won 4 playoff games in the NFL. However, his poor showing on this poll doesn’t tell me that people have woken up to the fact that teams win games and not quarterbacks. I think it has more to do with New York hate.

Matt Stafford could very well be the best of the bunch. Stafford has the stronger arm, Freeman is more elusive. Freeman also has more swagger in the huddle. I tend to give Stafford a slight edge on Freeman but this season is going to be pivotal in revealing any underlying weaknesses. Coach Rah said after the extra period loss to Stafford’s Lions (Stafford was – of course – not playing because he was injured) that he wishes he would have put the ball in Freeman’s hands late. By drafting Titus Young and Mikel Leshoure, I think Schwartz and OC Scott Linehan are also ready to take the training wheels off and finally get a return on their investment. Stafford plays more games indoors but – either way – these guys will have more attempts this year to help shape their bodies of work.
