Bucs Promote QB Rudy Carpenter From Practice Squad

The Buccaneers announced the promotion of quarterback Rudy Carpenter from the practice squad.

Linebacker Zac Diles has been waived to add Carpenter, who provides insurance at the quarterback position for the Buccaneers who may be without Josh Freeman, who is “Questionable” for tomorrow’s game with a sore right shoulder.

If Freeman cannot play, Josh Johnson would make his first start since the 2009 season.

Originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2009, Carpenter spent much of his first season on the Cowboys practice squad before the Buccaneers signed him to their active roster in Week 12 of the 2009 season.

Carpenter was on the Buccaneers’ active roster all of last season, but was waived in September and has been on the team’s practice squad since Week 1. The Buccaneers had been paying Carpenter an elevated practice squad salary of $11,765 per week, well above the $5,700 per week minimum.
