Bucs Ask and Gets Permission To Talk to Texans DC Wade Phillips

The Buccaneers have requested and received permission to interview Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips for their head coaching vacancy, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Phillips, 64, has an 82-61 regular season record as an NFL head coach with the New Orleans Saints (1985), Denver Broncos (1993-94), Buffalo Bills (1998-2000), Atlanta Falcons (2003) and Dallas Cowboys (2007-10). In six playoff games, Phillips’ teams are just 1-5.

The Cowboys fired Phillips midway through the 2010 season. Hired by the Texans, Phillips inherited a unit that ranked 30th in total defense and 32nd against the pass in 2010. Despite the absence of offseason workouts due to the lockout, and losing arguably their best player (Mario Williams) to season-ending injury early in the season, the Texans offense ranked second in the league in total defense and were No. 3 against the pass.

In addition to Phillips, several veteran NFL coaches are on the Buccaneers radar screen to replace Raheem Morris. Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman and Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray have already interviewed for the position. Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer former NFL head coaches Brad Childress and Marty Schottenheimer are also on the team’s list of candidates.
