Buccaneers Combine Check List

1. See if there’s a disciplined, fast-reacting linebacker to play inside for the Bucs.
Many of the linebacker drills come down to technique and suddenness. Safety has to be addressed in free agency. The Bucs allowed 2497 yards rushing, a year after allowing 2107. Their linebackers only had three INTs all year. This isn’t a great class of safeties, and – while I like him – Mark Barron is a reach at #5 and will likely be the first player off the board in the second round, where he should be taken.

2. Find a big, fast receiver to keep defenses honest. You can’t have too many Mike Williamses. The Bucs have the money to get a decent one in free agency (Vincent Jackson is the only one I have highly-rated; Bowe, Gar?on, Doucet, Colston, Manningham, Wayne and Meachum are all decent), but this is the best draft for wide receivers in a long time. They are drafting so early in the third, they could still get a good #2 who will eventually be a #1-level player.

3. Find another linebacker with superb pass-rushing and coverage skills.  They can’t be fully sold on McCoy and Price at DT, but the Bucs need to find at least one more LB to place high on their board, unless they plan on taking one in free agency.

4. Use Schiano’s knowledge from recruiting and coaching at college to narrow the interview list more efficiently, and to get in touch with some of the late-round gems he knows about.

5. Let Schiano get “his guy” for project QB or back-up QB. While not as phenomenal as the wide receiver class, the quarterback class is deep. In order for a coach to be given a fair shot, he has to at least have one QB that he personally helps pick and will be inextricably linked to.
