Tonight, Subway debuted it’s new “Bready” ad starring Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady, and it’s super bizarre for sure, and already generating a ton of buzz online (which is what Subway was probably hoping for).
Airing last night during Thursday Night Football, we saw Tom Brady dressed in a suit and shaded mysteriously in black and white, pulling a hearty multigrain loaf of bread from an oversized perfume bottle, encrusted with a “B” for “bready.”
He lifts the loaf to his face and inhales the aroma seductively.
“Smells so good, you can almost taste it,” his voiceover booms.
A narrator is quick to point out: “But you don’t even eat bread.”
Brady addresses this obvious conflict on his Instagram:
“People are wondering about my partnership with Subway. As this new commercial will tell you, I don’t eat much bread, but at the end of the day I recognize greatness when I see it. When they told me about all the new menu items they were launching, I couldn’t resist getting in on the fun. Bready…. It’s forbidden.”
Subway’s Eat Fresh Refresh campaign is a rather confusing one, but if it helps bring more people into their stores, then I guess it’s a good thing. But for me, these commercials of theirs just fall flat.
