In what is not exactly a surprise to Buccaneers fans and those who follow the Bucs, fullback Mike Alstott, according to Stephen F. Holder of the St. Petersburg Times, is expected to officially announce his retirement by week’s end. The Bucs are expected to hold a news conference, perhaps as early as Thursday.
Alstott spent the 2007 season on injured reserve with a neck injury suffered in training camp; after the season, Alstott also said that he did not plan to have more surgery to correct the problem in order to prolong his career. Alstott was a 1996 second-round pick from Purdue who went on to become a 6-time Pro Bowl participant; he has rushed for 5,088 yards – second in franchise history – while scoring 71 touchdowns, a franchise record.
