Buccs Sign A Handful Of Practice Squad Players

Via Pewter Report,

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed six of the players from their practice squad to future contracts this week. The players will be part of the 80-man offseason roster limit. All six players finished the season on the Bucs practice squad.

Players who are signed to “future” contracts means that they are signed for the 2010 season even though that season does not officially start until the spring. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the 2009 season began are eligible for these types of contracts. Players who were on NFL practice squads at the end of the year are eligible to sign with any team. Tampa Bay prevented their practice squad players from signing with another team by signing them to future contracts.

Three of the players signed to future contracts were cornerbacks Brandon Anderson (5-10, 179) and Stoney Woodson (5-10, 198). They played cornerback collegiately at Akron and South Carolina respectively. Anderson spent some time on the Bucs roster during the 2009 season.

Woodson’s college teammate safety Emanuel Cook (5-10, 185) was also signed to a future contract from the practice squad. Other defenders that were signed were linebacker Lee Robinson (6-2, 256) from Alcorn State and defensive end Maurice Evans (6-2, 264) from Penn State.

Evans was on the Bucs 53-man roster during the season, and was released. Tampa Bay signed him to their practice squad and after a few weeks there Evans was placed on practice squad injured reserve.

Only one of the players was on the offensive side of the football. Guard Marc Dile (6-4, 275) is from South Florida. Dile was on the practice squad all season after playing in training camp and the preseason with Tampa Bay. Like Anderson and Evans, Dile at one point was on the Bucs active roster during the 2009 season.
